Strawberry Mountains
Ice Climbing
Some people don't think there is reliable ice in Oregon, but there is! The area that we use is nestled in the Strawberry Mountains outside the small town of Prarie City. At nearly 9000 feet in elevation, Strawberry Mountain is the highest peak in the area and it creates a cold winter climate that is perfect for growing ice. Although well known for its summer beauty, the area is rarely visited by winter recreationalists. This makes for a fantastic day out in a pristine wintertime environment.
The area is a great choice for fit people to try their hand at swinging the tools, and in the right conditions, there are a few multi-pitch lines too. The approach is considered long by some standards (2 hours), but that is part of the allure of the area- no other people!
Most people will want to spend the night in the nearby town of John Day the night before climbing, as an early start will be required to maximize the day out. Come prepared for a full alpine day out in the wilds of Central Oregon!

Ratio: 3:1 maximum, but 2:1 is recomended.
Cost: $350 per day for one climber, $225 each per day for 2 climbers, $175 each per day for 3 climbers
