Pete Backcountry Skiing

Pete Keane

Pete is Director of Timberline Mountain Guides, Inc. He has been climbing since 1982 and guiding since 1989. Pete has made 5 expeditions to Alaska, including a successful ascent of the Cassin Ridge on Denali (6,194 meters), Ham and Eggs on the Moose's Tooth and the Southwest Ridge of Peak 11,300. He also attempted the Bonnington Route on the South Face of Annapurna I (8,091 meters), and has climbed Khan Tengri (6,995 meters) and attempted Pik Pobeda (7,439 meters), both in Kyrgyzstan. Pete also enjoys rock climbing in the desert and backcountry skiing. In the off season Pete tries to spend as much time as possible with his sons, Finn and Calvin. Pete is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock, Alpine Guide, and Ski Guide.  Pete has completed his AIARE Level III Avalanche Course, serves on the AMGA Board of Directors, and is a fully certified IFMGA Guide

Nick Backcountry Skiing

Nick Pope

Nick began climbing in 1986 and started guiding in 2003. Enjoying a wide spectrum of climbing and skiing, his travels have taken him from skiing in Switzerland to the big walls of Yosemite, from Canadian Rockies ice to Sierra Nevada alpine snow and rock, as well as many places in between. Now living in Portland, Oregon, Nick likes to climb and ski the mountains of Oregon. Washington and Canada. He is an active volunteer with Portland Mountain Rescue and is a Wilderness First Responder. Nick is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Guide, Certified Alpine Guide and Certified Ski Guide making him a fully certified IFMGA Guide.  He has also completed a  AIARE Level III Avalanche Course.

Chris Wright

Smith Rock Climbing School Guide, Chris Wright

Rarely to be found without a pack, a rack and a rope nearby, Chris would probably rather be climbing than just about anything else (except maybe skiing or cooking). Chris grew up in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania before moving to the Pacific Northwest where he's been climbing and guiding since 2006. At home most of the time in Bend, Chris has finally figured out how to use the holds at Smith and has climbed, guided, and established new routes in Alaska, Oregon and Washington, and climbed everywhere from across the US to New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, Mexico and Canada. Chris is an AMGA Certified Rock and Alpine Guide, a Wilderness First Responder, has completed the AIARE Level III Avalanche Course and holds a BFA from New York University. His climbing achievements include 5.12 rock, WI6 ice, M9 mixed, and everything from Yosemite big walls to first ascents on virgin Alaskan summits. Gabriel Coler

Gabriel Coler began climbing in the Berkshires of western Massachussetts in his early years, eventually making rock and ice ascents all over New England. After moving west for college, he cut his teeth in most of the major western climbing areas including:  alpine ascents throughout the Cascades, test-piece alpine climbs in the Canadian Rockies and French Alps, and most recently a free-ascent of Half-Dome’s Northwest Face .

Tico Allulee

Tico is a native of upstate New York and started learning to climb in the Gunks in the mid-90's. Since then, he's visited all 50 states and climbed rock in 40 of them, and is still learning the subtleties and tactics in the art of climbing. Highlights of his career include helping to lead the first disabled Nose-in-a-day, spending way too much time in the desert, and shredding the champagne powder of his current home in Utah. Tico has a B.A. from the University of Pennslyvania, is a Wilderness First Responder, has completed an AIARE Level III Avalanche Course, and is an AMGA Certified Rock Guide. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Marc Ripperger

A Native to the plains of Iowa, Marc relocated to the West in order to pursue his outdoor passions.  Marc has guided from the towers of the desert southwest to the peaks of South America.  His love for rock, ice and mountain climbing has taken him to the big walls of Yosemite, Rocky Mountains, High Sierras, North Cascades, the Ruth Gorge in Alaska, Cordillera Blanca Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador.  Marc is passionate about instructing and educating  climbers on all levels.  When not climbing, Marc spends time with his wife and tries to utilize his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and enjoying the sunshine of home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Marc is currently pursuing his full certification from the AMGA. He has completed the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course and is now an AMGA Certified Rock Guide.

 

 

 

 

 

Joe OwensJoe Climbing Mt. Hood

Joe has been climbing since 1991 and guiding and instructing since 1993. He has climbed all over the Northwest with multiple ascents of Mt. Rainier, Forbidden Peak, and Liberty Bell. Joe has also climbed in Alaska, the Sierra, Canadian Rockies, Ecuador and the infamous Ben Nevis in Scotland. Originally from Ireland, Joe came to the US for the free form lifestyle and climbing opportunities. He is an active volunteer for Portland Mountain Rescue. In the off season, Joe continues to climb and travel around the world. He has completed the American Mountain Guides Association Rock Instructor Course, Alpine Guides Course and the Advanced Alpine Guides Course and has completed the Level III Avalanche Course. Joe currently guides rock climbing, mountaineering and winter programs.

Ben Climbing Mt. Hood

Ben Randall

Ben has climbed extensively across the North American continent. From the steep walls of Eldorado Canyon to the big walls of El Portrero Chico in Mexico. Mountain ascents include a one day winter ascent of Kieners on Longs Peak, to multiple accents of Mt. Rainier, to hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro. Ben has completed the AMGA Rock Instructor Course and Alpine Guides Course, and is working towards full UIAGM/IFMGA certification. Ben has also completed a Level I Avalanche Course. In the off season, Ben enjoys backcountry skiing and climbing in the Colorado Rockies as well as desert cragging in Utah. Ben has been guiding for TMG since the spring of 2005 and guides both rock and alpine climbing.

Phil Climbing Mt. Hood

Phil Bowker

Phil was born in Belfast, N. Ireland and started his climbing career on the gritstone crags of the Peak District when he moved to Sheffield, England in 1988. Phil then moved to Chamonix, France where he lived for many years making the Alps his ‘back door’ playground. He has also traveled to Pakistan making the first ascent of Khoz Sar (6,100 meters) and Western China to attempt Kuksulak (7,500 meters). Other climbing destinations include Australia, Mexico, Thailand, and South America. Phil came to America in 2002 to climb in Yosemite and began working for Timberline Mountain Guides in 2006. He is an American Mountain Guides Association Top Rope Site Manager and has completed his Rock Instructor Course and Alpine Guides Course as well as his Level II Avalanche Course. During the winter Phil works as a Professional Ski Patroller on Mt. Bachelor and holds an EMT-B certification.

 

 

 

 

 

Geoff Lodge

A native or Oregon, Geoff has been climbing since 1997 and guiding since 2005. Apart from successfully summiting all of the Cascade volcanoes from California to British Columbia, he has done most of them multiple times and most by various routes. When not in the Northwest working difficult alpine routes, you will find him in the Sierra, Tetons, North Cascades, Bugaboos, and the Rockies climbing. Geoff successfully summited both Liberty Ridge on Rainier and Casaval Ridge on Shasta in a total of four days, both separated by 500 miles and two state lines, on a friends dare in a pub! His friend now owes him beer the rest of his life. When not guiding, Geoff enjoys backcountry skiing, climbing with his dog Kaya, and is a staff member of the Iceaxemen, a high school program that educates students in climbing, backcountry skills, and leadership in the Northwest. Geoff is an proffesional member of the American Mountain Guides Association and has completed his Rock Instructor and Alpine Guides courses looking to one day be a fully certified IFMGA guide. He also has his AIARE Avalanche Level II, is an AIARE Level I Instructor and is a Wilderness First Responder. Geoff guides rock/alpine climbing and teaches AIARE avalanche courses.

David SaigetDavid Climbng Mt. Hood

David has been climbing since 1974 and guiding since 1979. He has climbed and traveled all over the world with many trips to Southeast Asia. He has a working knowledge of Nepali and Thai languages. Some highlights of David's career include getting to 7,900 meters on Cho Oyu (8,201 meters) and having to rescue a teammate that was stricken with cerebral edema and an epic 63 day expedition to Alaska where the team skied in to Denali (6,194 meters) from Talkeetna and successfully climbed to the summit. David has also climbed the elusive North Face of Mt. Robson in the Canadian Rockies and El Capitan in Yosemite . When not guiding,  David works as a Fisheries Biologist for the US Forest Service. In addition, David is also the father of two boys, Matthew and Jonathan, and his daughter Morgan, who are regularly hauled-out on their own ‘epic’ mountain trips with their father. David guides mountaineering and rock climbing.

Carlos Cummings

Carlos is a graduate from Oregon State University’s Outdoor Recreation and Leadership Program and focused his studies in Commercial Recreation Management. He began his career with Timberline Mountain Guides as an intern in 2005 and is now the Office Manager. Carlos has immersed himself in the backcounty for years. He has backpacked and climbed in the Adirondacks, the Oregon and Washington Cascades, as well as an international mountaineering trip to Mexico. He is planning to travel back to Mexico to complete his goal of summiting both El Pico de Orizaba and Volcano Ixtaccihuatl soon. He has climbed Mt. Hood several times by different routes as well as many of the Pacific Northwest volcanoes. He has completed the Wilderness First Responder Course, the AIARE Level II Avalanche Course and is currently an AIARE Level I Instructor. He is an avid splitboarder and ventures into the backcountry for turns as often as he can. Carlos enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife Janice and their twin girls.

 

 

 

John MacKinnonJohn Backcountry Skiing in the Central Oregon Cascades

John works year round as a mountain guide and splits his time between Crested Butte, CO and Bend, OR. He spends winters in Colorado where he guides backcountry skiing, teaches AIARE Level 1 and Level 2 avalanche safety courses and works as an avalanche forecaster for the Crested Butte Avalanche Center. John has spent three summer seasons working for TMG guiding primarily on Mt. Hood and at Smith Rock State Park. John is an AIARE Level 2 Course Leader, AIARE Level 3 certified, a Wilderness First Responder and has a B.A. in Geosciences form Williams College. He has successfully completed both the AMGA Rock Instructors Course and Alpine Guides Course and is an Aspirant Ski Mountaineering Guide.

Smith Rock Climbing School Guide, Rodney Sofich

Rodney Sofich

Rodney is an Oregon native.  Rodney has been guiding for Timberline Mountain Guides since 2007.  When he joined our team he brought his diverse outdoor experience.  He has been guiding on Pacific Northwest volcanoes for the past six years.  Within that time period he found time to be a seasonal Wilderness and Climbing Ranger for the Mt. Hood National Forest.  When Rodney is not guiding he is either working for Reed College teaching outdoor leadership skills, co-instructing avalanche courses with Mountain Savvy, filling in hours at a locally owned outdoor shop, or teaching cross country skiing with a local city program.  Rodney has a Masters degree from Portland State University in Public Administration of Natural Resources, has completed the AIARE Level II Avalanche Course and is pursuing professional development with the AMGA, having completed the Single Pitch Instructors Course in 2007 and the Rock Instructors Course in 2008.

Mike Rougeux

Mike began exploring the outdoors in the Adirondacks of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont.  His passion for rock climbing was fueled by his first climbing experience at the historic cliffs of the Shawangunks in NY.  Since being bit by the climbing bug Mike has climbed extensively throughout New England and North America.  If he’s not climbing Mike enjoys searching for untracked powder on his splitboard.  Mike graduated from Johnson State College in VT with a degree in Adventure Education and Wilderness Leadership.  He has completed the AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Course, Level I Avalanche, is a certified USA Climbing Coach, and a Wilderness First Responder.

 

 

 

Todd Glew

Todd began climbing in Massachusetts and began to ski and scale the peaks of New England in high school. His passion for skiing and climbing drove him to Alta, Utah shortly after high school. He has spent 8 years in the Western United States skiing and climbing. In 2008 he competed in the Ski Mountaineering World Championships as a member of the United States Ski Mountaineering Team. He received a degree in Experiential Education from the University of Utah in 2008. Todd has guided skiing, climbing, and canyoneering for at-risk high school boys. He currently works as a ski guide for Utah Mountain Adventures and as an avalanche observer during the winter. Todd has an Avalanche II Certification and a Wilderness First Responder Certification.   

  

 

Cliff Agocs

Cliff has been climbing since 2002. He began learning rock and alpine climbing in Lake Tahoe, CA and then made Yosemite his home crag. Since then he has climbed in the Sierra Nevada regularly, and made trips to destinations ranging from the Tetons to Joshua Tree to Nepal. He has guided in California and Mexico, but most recently the climbing bug has drawn him to the alpine routes of the Pacific Northwest. He has completed the AMGA Rock Instructor Course and Level I avalanche certification through AIARE, and is trained as a Wilderness First Responder. He guides rock climbing and mountaineering programs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Brian Campbell

Brian is currently our Mountain Office Manager. He grew up in Park City, Utah skiing in the Wasatch Mountains and recreating in the outdoors all over Utah and the majority of the Western United States. In 2006 he moved to Ashland, Oregon to attend Southern Oregon University where he studied English, Philosophy, and Outdoor Adventure Leadership. While living in Ashland he began climbing rocks and mountains, while simultaneously kayaking and guiding whitewater trips. After graduating he decided he wanted to pursue a carrer as a mountain guide which lead him to Timberline Mountain Guides and Smith Rock Climbing School in 2011. Brian is a certified Wilderness First Responder, he completed an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course and he is working towards AMGA certifications.  

 

 

Aaron Hartz

Aaron was born and raised in western Oregon and started skiing as a kid.  After being introduced to backcountry skiing, he started climbing and skiing the cascade volcanoes to prolong the ski season.  He has climbed and skied most of the cascades from Mt. Ranier to Mt. Lassen. 
Aaron has completed the AIARE level II avalanche certification and the AMGA ski guide course.  He is also a wilderness first responder,  an active member in the Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit, and works as a trip leader and instructor in the outdoor program at Oregon State University.

 

 

 

 

 

Joe Difulgentis

Joe grew up in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania and didnt start climbing until moving to Colorado in 2003.  Now a resident of Montana, he has completed alpine climbs and ski descents throughout the Rockies, Tetons, Cascades and Alaska Range.  During the winter months, he is a ski patroller at the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, MT.  Joe is an EMT-B, OEC and has taken the Level II avalanche course through AIARE as well as the AMGA ski guides course.  On days off, Joe spends time with his fiance and enjoys mountain biking, fly fishing, brewing craft beer and playing bluegrass music.

Mike Johnson

Mike’s addiction to backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering began in 1981 in Southwest Colorado climbing and skiing the peaks of the San Juan Mountains. He has been consistently racking up serious vertical ever since, leading trips in the US, Canada and Europe. Some of his favorite frequented backcountry touring locations are: in Canada-- Rogers, Kootenay and Jumbo Passes of British Columbia, in Wyoming the East side of the Teton Mountains, the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest and the Southern Tirol region of Austria and Italy.
 
Mike has a Wilderness First Responder certification; he completed the Canadian Avalanche Skills Level 2 Training and is enrolled in the AMGA Ski Guide program, and he also has a degree in Geographic Informational Systems.
 
 
 

Iain Morris

 

Oregon-grown, Iain headed into the Cascades at an early age, coming home frozen with wet jeans and flannel shirts smelling like moss and campfires.  He's learned a few things since then, and has been climbing and skiing in the Canadian Rockies, Selkirks, the Alps, North Cascades, and many places in between.  Iain has been an active member of Portland Mountain Rescue and Corvallis Mountain Rescue since 1999, and has served as examiner for the Oregon Mountain Rescue Council for national MRA accreditation.  He has a B.A. in Geology, is a WMI Wilderness First Responder and holds an AIARE Level III certification.  He spends his free time gardening, birding, and brewing often-drinkable beer in Bend, OR.
